Retail & Showroom Interior Design

Spaces that make people slow down, look closer, and remember your brand long after they've left the room.

Retail interiors are measured differently from workplaces. The space has a commercial job - to slow people down, present product well, and move them through a sequence that ends at a purchase. Every decision about layout, lighting, and finish either supports that sequence or works against it, and unlike an office, the results show up in the trading figures.

Scope

What's included.

The disciplines this service covers, delivered under one contract and one point of accountability.

  • 01

    Store layout & customer flow

Entrance treatment, circulation routes, decompression zones, and sightlines planned around how customers move rather than how the floor plate divides.

  • 02

    Display & fixture design

Bespoke and systems-based display joinery designed for the product, with adjustability built in for changing ranges and seasons.

  • 03

    Retail lighting design

Accent, ambient, and display lighting specified to the beam angles, colour rendering, and contrast ratios that make product read correctly.

  • 04

    Brand & environmental graphics

Signage, wayfinding, and applied brand elements integrated into the architecture rather than added to the walls afterwards.

  • 05

    Durable finishes specification

Floor, wall, and fixture finishes chosen for the footfall and cleaning regime they will actually face over the lease term.

  • 06

    Phased and out-of-hours delivery

Programmes structured around trading hours and mall or landlord access restrictions, so refits happen without closing the store where possible.

Approach

Lighting does most of the selling

Retail lighting is the single highest-leverage decision in a store fit-out and the one most often reduced to a lux target. Colour rendering determines whether a fabric or a finish looks like itself. Contrast ratio between ambient and accent determines whether the eye lands on the product or drifts past it. Beam angle and mounting position determine whether a display reads as deliberate or as a shadow. Specified properly, lighting changes how merchandise performs on the same shelf.

Layouts built around the route, not the rectangle

Customers enter, need a few metres to adjust, then follow sightlines. A layout that ignores that sequence puts the highest-margin product where nobody has started looking yet. Circulation, decompression at the entrance, focal points, and the position of the till are planned as a route with an intended order, and the fixtures are placed to serve it.

Finishes specified for the lease, not the photograph

Retail environments take punishment that offices never see - trolleys, footfall concentrated in narrow routes, daily cleaning with aggressive products. Finishes that photograph beautifully on handover day and look tired within a season are a false economy. We specify against the traffic and the cleaning regime the space will genuinely face, then detail the junctions and edges where wear actually starts.

Questions

Retail & Showroom Interiors, answered.

The questions we're asked most often about this part of the work.

  • Often, yes. Phased and out-of-hours programmes are common in retail - we hoard the work zone, run the disruptive trades overnight or outside trading hours, and sequence the phases so a trading floor remains available. Whether a full closure is faster and cheaper overall depends on the store, and it is worth pricing both.

  • Yes. Where a brand book, fixture standard, or global store manual exists we build to it and handle the local execution, statutory compliance, and landlord coordination. Where one does not, we can develop a repeatable specification that later stores can be rolled out against.

  • Significantly, and they need to be established before the programme is fixed. Access windows, permitted working hours, noise restrictions, delivery routes, and fit-out approval processes vary widely between landlords, and each one constrains how the work can be sequenced.
